Project in progress: Tunnel of Beveren

On Monday 15 July, the Roads and Traffic Agency (Agentschap Wegen en Verkeer) gave the official go-ahead for the total renovation of the tunnel of Beveren. Consortium TM Bever - consisting of BESIX, BESIX Infra, BESIX Unitec, Stadsbader, STADSBADER CONTRACTORS and Equans - is carrying out the works.

The tunnel of Beveren, a crucial traffic artery on Antwerp's R2 ring road, handles 4.75 million vehicles annually. In view of increasing traffic and modern safety standards, this renovation is necessary.

The renovation includes replacement of the road surface and lighting, renewal of the tunnel mouths, a new ventilation system and renovation of the service buildings. There will also be a solar panel park and a water treatment plant. The works will take at least a year, with six months per tunnel tube and subsequent safety tests. Completion is scheduled for late summer 2025.
